I am bilingual.
For 30 years I called Aotearoa/New Zealand my home. This experience has shaped and influenced me who I am today.
It has also given me the experience of being an 'import' - not local, a foreigner. This now helps me have insights into and an understanding of how many non-dutch residents experience their chosen or laid upon exiles from their homeland.
My thoughts and experiences are therefor somewhat different to those never having left their home country, always having lived in the security of what is comfortable and recognisable. It is hard for those not having to think and act different to their natural instincts and customs, to understand those who struggle with it. My kiwi life, has also influenced my cooking skills and experiences, so at times my recipes in my 'Keuken' (=kitchen) blog will highlight those differences.
In this blog I sometimes translate a topic and there are times when I don't. Not all situations give rise to share in both languages.
I write from my perspective as a dutch - kiwi, believer, mother, daughter, oma, wife and friend.
Be a welcome visitor on my blog and leave a comment should you so wish.
Anita
